BP and GE have announced the launch of Plant Operations Advisor (POA), a new digital technology solution developed to enhance efficiency, reliability and security of oil and gas operations.

Plant Operations Advisor (POA) is already deployed in one of BP's platforms in the Gulf of Mexico. If satisfied with its performance, the tool will be deployed globally at other BP facilities in 2017.

Built on GE's Predix operating system, the tool was created under a development partnership between the two companies announced in January.

GE Oil & Gas president and CEO Lorenzo Simonelli said: “BP gravitates toward new technologies, especially digital, and that makes working with them particularly exciting.

"The global deployment is expected to be the largest-scale deployment of GE’s Predixpowered APM technology to date."

“We are taking a big step forward together during this time of digital transformation, deploying what we've co-created over the past year to drive the kind of productivity improvements that the oil and gas industry needs.

"The global deployment is expected to be the largest-scale deployment of GE's Predixpowered APM technology to date.”

POA is designed to prevent unplanned downtime and better facility reliability by assisting engineering teams to swiftly respond in any real-time issue.

BP head of upstream technology Ahmed Hashmi said: “By bringing together some of the best minds at GE and BP, we were able to develop this innovative digital product and are confident that it will have a significant impact on our business.

“When fully deployed, these advanced digital technologies will change the way we work and improve the integrity and performance of our assets around the globe.”

POA leverages GE’s Predix and Asset Performance Management (APM) capabilities that allow integrating operational data from oil and gas facilities and notifying engineers with analytical reports. The engineers can then identify operational performance issues at the nascent level.

The system also provides simplified access to different live data feeds with visualisation capabilities, including a real-time facility threat display.

POA also features an extensive case management capability to provide data about prior operational issues.
