Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) has rolled out an AI-enabled process optimisation technology, Neuron 5, to advance its operational capabilities.

The technology, initially deployed at ADNOC Onshore’s Northeast Bab field and ADNOC Gas’s Taweelah gas compression plant, is now set to be expanded to all ADNOC facilities.

Developed by ADNOC’s Thamama Excellence Center, AIQ and AVEVA, Neuron 5 operates autonomously, monitoring the performance of critical equipment to facilitate process optimisation and preventative maintenance.

This reduces operational downtime and increases efficiency while diminishing the need for manual inspections.

The technology employs advanced AI models and deep learning algorithms to anticipate maintenance needs and evaluate equipment performance using data from sensors.

ADNOC said the successful pilot phase of Neuron 5 has shown promising results, indicating a potential halving of unplanned shutdowns and a 20% increase in planned maintenance intervals.

ADNOC upstream executive director Abdulmunim Saif Al Kindy said: “ADNOC is placing AI at the heart of its operations and leveraging industry-leading advanced technologies to help responsibly meet the world’s growing energy demand.

“The development and deployment of Neuron 5 across our upstream and downstream facilities demonstrates this strategy in action and highlights our continued progress towards our vision to become the world’s most AI-enabled energy company.”

Neuron 5’s launch follows ADNOC’s deployment of RoboWell, an AI-driven autonomous well-control system, at its NASR field.

RoboWell, developed in collaboration with AIQ, uses cloud-based AI algorithms to manage well operations autonomously, adapting to varying conditions and enhancing operational safety.

Most recently, ADNOC also boosted production capacity at its offshore Satah Al Razboot field by 25% with advanced digital technologies, enabling remote operation from Zirku island, 20km away.

According to Offshore Technology’s parent company, GlobalData, AI technology is transforming oil and gas sector productivity across exploration, production, refining and logistics.
