AIS was founded in 1963 and from the outset chose the petrochemical sector. However, the company's first significant task was a construction of a plant for the production of vegetable oils in Ravenna.

In the 1970s, AIS grew through the acquisition of several important works for ANIC S.p.A. and for other large oil companies, and the company extended its operational range to include the preparation of offshore rigs for the extraction of hydrocarbons.
