With a heritage of more than 60 years of successful Swiss Oil Technology and having had a focus on biodegradable and minimal toxicity lubricants for the past 30+ years, PANOLIN today is a global leader in environmentally considerate lubricants (ECLs) for the marine and offshore sectors.
The company’s product range covers five types of lubricants, which include hydraulic fluids for propulsion systems, deck equipment and control lines, gear oils for gearboxes and thrusters, stern tube lubricant, grease and wire rope lubricant. They are used across all vessel / ROV applications in propulsion / steering / stability and also platform machinery.
Environmentally compliant lubricants for the offshore industry
PANOLIN’s products have been engineered for the demanding offshore and subsea environments and are approved by leading OEMs.
Accreditations such as CEFAS for the UK (OCNS Group E), with no substitution warnings, and Euromargerite (Ecolabel) bear testimony to the stringent targets for biodegradability, toxicity and bioaccumulation, met by PANOLIN’s ECLs.
Selected Panolin lubricants are in compliance with the OSPAR Convention (the Convention for the Protection of the marine environment of the north-east Atlantic), with particular reference to Annex III: Prevention and elimination of pollution from offshore sources and the Harmonised Offshore Chemical Notification Format (HOCNF), which applies to all chemicals used in connection with offshore exploration and production activities in the OSPAR maritime area.
It is essential that all substances included on a HOCNF also fully comply with the relevant requirements of REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and research of CHemicals) for that substance.
These selected PANOLIN lubricants are also in compliance with the national HOCNF environmental requirements of Denmark, Norway and The Netherlands.
Products within the HLP SYNTH and ATLANTIS hydraulic fluid range pass the survival and growth testing of Mysidopsis bahia and Menidia beryllina, which are found in the Gulf of Mexico and comply with US Environmental Protection Agency code EPA /821/R-02/012 Edition 2002.
Additionally, the EPA has allowed PANOLIN to use its logo on its GREENMARINE product data sheets as an acknowledgement that its products meet the ecological requirements of the Vessel General Permit 2013.
PANOLIN has a unique technology, using different saturated synthetic esters and specially selected additives to produce lubricants of outstanding performance and value for money.
Marine lubricant applications
PANOLIN GreenMarine ECLs are applicable in hydraulics, propulsion and steering systems and all manner of component lubrication systems in ships, dredgers, subsea equipment.
The advantages of GREENMARINE ECLs include:
- Environmental benefits in areas of great ecological sensitivity
- Long-life between refills
- Outstanding resistance to thermal oxidation (anti-ageing)
- Stability at elevated temperatures (higher than many specialist mineral oil-based lubricants)
- Wear protection
PANOLIN uses unique technology, implementing various saturated synthetic esters and specially selected additives to develop high-performance lubricants. The long-life of PANOLIN’s products can extend service times between dry dockings.
Major OEMs approve the use of the company’s lubricants in their equipment. With the correct lubricant selection, operating costs will be reduced and environmental sustainability increased.
PANOLIN’s well-established products have been developed for the demanding marine environment, as well as to exceed all performance requirements. These lubricants reduce CO² emissions by offering superior equipment efficiency through lower friction and a reduced need to dispose of used lubricant.
