Emerson Process Management has launched the latest versions of its full reservoir simulation tool Roxar Tempest™ 6.7, and its history matching and uncertainty estimation software Roxar EnABLE™ 2.4.

The new versions bring a number of significant advances to the history matching and reservoir simulation workflow, including improved usability in history matching, such as new plotting and workflow features for large history matching projects; faster and less memory-intensive simulation models; and enhanced tools for making economic evaluations of reservoirs.

The Tempest reservoir simulation suite, used in hundreds of installations worldwide, guides users through the entire reservoir simulation process. This includes the preparation and analysis of original data, compositional and black-oil simulation, results study and visualisation, and economic evaluation.

Roxar Tempest 6.7 has seen a significant strengthening of current functionalities and usability. The modelling of complex wells and hydraulic fracturing has been improved and a Todd-Longstaff solvent feature allows for the efficient simulation of CO2 floods. Other highlights include optimized memory usage through its graphical interactive program Tempest View, with the Load on Demand facility requiring only a fraction of the memory of previous versions. This lets engineers simultaneously analyze many more models with complex wells and fine grids. In addition, derived data, such as group totals and well ratios, can be processed on demand, greatly speeding up model loading.

Tempest 6.7 will also see improved functionalities for economic forecasting with aggregate rates calculated and displayed, making it easier to interact with other programs, such as economic evaluators and spreadsheets; and a new feature in Tempest Lift, where lift model parameters can be regressed against observed data, such as friction, fluid gravity or gas-liquid slips.

Other usability features include improved graph alignment and color scaling which better highlight key areas within the simulation process (such as when saturation is changing), and a ‘Plot Sim’ option, which plots the simulated data closest in time to the observed data and makes scanning through multiple wells with sparse observed data much quicker. A variety of grid transforms are also available to set model exaggeration, control layer thickness, and explode the model between layers so the user can view inside.

EnABLE is used by operators worldwide for a better understanding and measurement of uncertainty in reservoir production performance estimates. Using an advanced statistical framework and proxy model, based on conventional reservoir simulations, EnABLE provides E&P companies with a rapid understanding of production behavior and the creation of robust uncertainty forecasts.

Key enhancements in EnABLE 2.4 focus on its usability with an improved results filter and a new console log that can store and carry out an audit trail of all user activities. Other functionalities include a new progress indicator to see how long plotting is taking; improved error and message handling; a new tool bar so that the EnABLE application can be easily navigated; the ability to color code according to activity type; and a powerful new search facility. EnABLE 2.4 will also have additional integration capabilities including the ability to select estimator points on tracers for the ECLIPSE* simulator.

Tempest 6.7 and EnABLE 2.4 will run on Windows and Linux desktop machines with multi-core CPUs, and on clusters and Windows HPC servers.
