At Gastech 2011, Armacell presents the first integrated thermal-acoustic insulation systems for cold applications. A targeted combination of new and tried-and-tested Armacell products makes it possible: ArmaSound Industrial Systems pro¬vide not only the desired noise control, the insulation systems also protect the installations against condensation and moisture penetration. Thus they effectively reduce the risk of corrosion under insulation (CUI) and prevent energy losses.

Depending on the area of application, the product is available in different versions with various insulation layers and thicknesses. All ArmaSound Industrial Systems meet the requirements of ISO 15665 ‘Acoustics. Acoustic insulation for pipes, valves and flanges’.

In industrial environments, pipes through which gases, vapours or liquids flow can be a considerable source of noise pollution, thus often representing a serious health and safety risk for the workforce. As it is usually not only necessary to in¬sulate the pipes against noise but also to protect them against energy losses, condensation and mechanical impact, the use of insulation con¬structions is advisable.

With ArmaSound Industrial Systems, Armacell presents sandwich systems which meet the requirements of ISO 15665 ‘Acoustics. Acoustic insula¬tion for pipes, valves and flanges’. The standard distinguishes between classes A, B and C, and Armacell correspondingly offers three different insulation systems, with ArmaSound Industrial System C providing the highest overall acoustic reduction. Moreover, ArmaSound Industrial System D was specifically developed to meet Class D of Shell Specification DEP No. 31.

In comparison to traditional insulation constructions, ArmaSound Indus¬trial Systems meet the target requirements with significantly reduced insulation thick¬ness and weight. Furthermore, the flexible systems offer benefits during installa¬tion and are easier to maintain. The system consists of the following components:

  • Armaflex, the world’s leading flexible insulation material which, due to its closed microcell structure, low thermal conductivity and high resistance to water vapour transmission, provides installations with long-term, reliable protection against water ingress and energy losses
  • ArmaSound RD 240, an open-cell acoustic foam with excellent sound ab¬sorption properties at lower in¬sulation thicknesses
  • ArmaSound Barrier E, sound control barrier mats made of vinyl which greatly reduce the transmission of air-borne sound from installations and further enhance the sound absorption behaviour
  • Arma-Chek R, a high-density, rubber-based cladding system which minimises the risk of corrosion under insula¬tion (CUI) and offers exceptional resistance against salt water, mechanical impact and UV attack

On request, the acoustic insulation systems can also be supplied with a metal cladding. If thermal-acoustic insulation is required on low-temperature installa¬tions the combined use of Armaflex Cryogenic Systems, Armacell’s new low-temperature insulation systems, is recommended. These systems are coordi¬nated with each other and meet the requirements for cryogenic applications with signifi¬cantly reduced insulation thickness and weight compared to traditional in¬sulation systems.

ArmaSound Industrial Systems have been developed for insulating pipes in industrial environments, for example in the oil and gas industry. The insulation constructions are resistant to UV-radiation, oil, chemical and weather attack. All ArmaSound Industrial Systems meet NORSOK standard R-004 of the Norwegian oil and gas industry (classes 6, 7 and 8) and ASTM E 1222.

The thermal-acoustic insulation systems have been specified for ventures operated by some of the leading international oil and gas companies, such as the new Ammonia-Urea-Melamine complex (Trinidad), the Sonatrach Skikda LNG project (Algeria), the Gorgon LNG terminal (Australia), and many others.
