GlobalData’s latest report, ‘Global Ammonia Capacity and Capital Expenditure Outlook, 2020-2030 – India and Russia to Lead Globally in Terms of Ammonia Capacity Additions’ states that the global ammonia capacity is poised to see considerable growth over the upcoming years, potentially increasing from 235.34 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) in 2019 to 289.83Mtpa in 2030. Around 107 planned and announced plants are slated to come online primarily in Asia and the Middle East.

In Asia, India is planning to start 16 planned and announced ammonia plants, with a total capacity of about 9.25Mtpa by 2030. The country is expected to spend a capital expenditure (capex) of $6.55bn. Major capacity additions will be from Reliance Industries Ltd.

In the Middle East, Iran leads with planned and announced capacity additions of about 7.70Mtpa by 2030. The country is expected to spend a total of $4.46bn by 2030. Faradast Energy Falat Co is the top company accounting for the major capacity additions in Iran.

In Africa, Nigeria has highest planned and announced ammonia plants with a total capacity of 7.39Mtpa by 2030. The capex for these plants is $5.57bn by 2030.

In the Former Soviet Union (FSU), the majority of capacity additions are in Russia, with planned and announced capacity additions of about 7.70Mtpa by 2030. Capex for these plants totals $7.99bn by 2030. Oteko is the top company accounting for the major capacity additions in Russia.

In North America, the majority of ammonia capacity additions are in the US, with planned and announced capacity additions of about 4.32Mtpa by 2030. Capex for these plants totals $4.94bn in the upcoming years.

In Oceania, Australia plans to spend $1.69bn to add capacity of about 1.49Mtpa expected on stream by 2030.

Dangote Industries Ltd, Oteko and Nagarjuna Fertilizers and Chemicals Ltd are the top three companies by planned capacity additions globally over the upcoming years.
