Shipyards and shipowners are now imposed to control and document that watertight cable transits on ships and mobile offshore units are installed, modified and maintained according to the manufacturers guidelines.
A common problem in the industry has been that these cable transits are installed or modified incorrectly, causing great risk to the asset. The International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) has addressed this through its updated unified requirements, applicable to all new builds contracted after 1 July 2021.
In short, these unified requirements require the shipyard to deliver to the shipowner a register with complete documentation of installation, compliant with the manufacturer’s guidelines. The shipowner must maintain this register, and any changes or modifications to it must be documented.
The register must be reviewed annually, and the cable transits must be inspected on a 5 year basis. These inspections must be documented in the register.
