Thiess, a Leighton Holdings subsidiary, and Bechtel Oil & Gas Chemicals have received a A$450m ($465.8m) contract to deliver site preparation works at the Chevron-operated Wheatstone project in Western Australia.
Thiess will undertake the downstream portion of the planned project, including bulk and final-finish earthworks for the plant, a storm water drainage system and access roads around the project.
The firm’s managing director Bruce Munro said: "Thiess brings to the sector a proven track record in managing the logistical challenges of these large geographically dispersed projects and we look forward to growing our involvement in the bourgeoning LNG industry, both in Western Australia and Queensland."
Work is scheduled to commence on the site early in the fourth quarter of 2012, with site preparation works to be completed in early 2014.
The deal is Thiess’ fourth contract on the $29bn Wheatstone project, in which Chevron currently owns a 73% stake.
Other partners include Apache Corporation with a 13% interest, Kuwait Foreign Petroleum Exploration Company with a 7% interest and Shell, which holds a 7% stake.
