Redline Communications Group, a broadband wireless solutions provider, has launched the second phase of a major wireless oil field project for Shell Oil joint venture Petroleum Development Oman (PDO).
The company said it has completed the first phase of the project where over 2,000 of the 5,000 oil wells in the Oman prospect are now connected with a wireless network to a centralised site, where they are remotely monitored and managed.
The system enables data and information flow between all the oil wells and the central control location, offering information on what is happening in the field.
PDO IT Projects head Saeed Al Shidhani said "We have seen immediate and significant improvements inperformance and data throughput as a result of the wireless digital connectivity delivered by Redline and we plan to more than double the number of wells that are included in this system in the coming months."
The wireless infrastructure network minimises the need to have workers move from well to well to collect critical operating information.
Rigs and semi-mobile units are also now wirelessly connected using Redline products, allowing person to person communications and access to corporate systems regardless of location.
