Japan’s JFE Steel Corporation and Marubeni-Itochu Steel have secured an order to supply 150,000 tons of line pipes for Chevron’s Wheatstone Project, in Western Australia.
The JFE Steel’s DNV-grade-450 UOE line pipe, a high-strength steel pipe with a 44-inch outer diameter, will be used to build the planned 225km pipeline to transport natural gas to the liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant in Ashburton North.
Chevron is the operator of the $29bn Wheatstone Project, which involves the construction of two LNG trains and a domestic gas plant 12km west of Onslow, on the Pilbara coast.
Gas will be transported through a pipeline, from an offshore processing platform, to the onshore facilities for processing.
The first two LNG trains will be supplied with gas from the Chevron-operated Wheatstone and Iago fields and will have a combined capacity of 8.9 million tons a year.
The first LNG shipments are scheduled for 2016.
