The Enterprise Gas Project is a nearshore gas field development situated in Victoria, Australia.

The gas field lies within the Victorian Otway Basin, under the exploration permit VIC/P42(V), which is jointly owned by Beach Energy (60%) and the operator, OG Energy (40%). It is the first Victorian production licence to be granted in a decade.

The project is notable for having one of the longest extended-reach wells in the Southern Hemisphere.

Gas production began in June 2024, after the completion and commissioning of the wellsite facilities.

Enterprise gas project location

The Enterprise reservoir lies approximately 5.5km from the Victorian coastline, within the Otway Basin.

Enterprise gas field discovery and appraisal

The Enterprise gas field was discovered in November 2020 through the Enterprise 1 exploration well.

The Enterprise 1 well was spudded from an onshore location, 3.5km from Port Campbell and 8km from the Otway gas plant, which is operated by Beach Energy’s subsidiary Lattice Energy. It was directionally drilled using extended-reach drilling (ERD) technology, achieving a well with a 3.2km step-out to the target.

The well reached a total measured depth (MD) of 4,974m, encountering the primary reservoir target of the Upper Waarre Formation 89m higher than anticipated, at a depth of 4,594m (MD). A 146m gas column was intersected in the Upper Waarre Formation, including 115m of net gas pay, with no gas-water contact detected.

Reserves at Enterprise gas project

The gas field is estimated to contain proven and probable (2P) reserves of 34 million barrels of oil equivalent (mboe), as of February 2021.

The 2P reserves comprise 161 petajoules (PJ) of sales gas, 352 kilotonnes of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), and four million barrels (mbbl) of condensate, with an initial gas-condensate yield of approximately 25 barrels per million standard cubic feet (bbl/mscf).

Enterprise gas project details

The Enterprise gas project features an onshore well site that extracts raw gas from the Enterprise gas reservoir.

The onshore well site, located approximately 4km west of Port Campbell, extends around 2.5km from the coastline and reaches depths ranging between 2.1km and 2.7km below mean sea level.

The website comprises the wellhead, transportable facility buildings, and equipment necessary for transporting the gas to the Otway gas plant for processing. It is remotely monitored and maintained from the Otway gas plant central control room.

An 11km pipeline (PL006998) links the onshore well site to the Otway gas plant. The pipeline’s route commences at the onshore Enterprise well site and merges into the existing easements that accommodate Beach’s PL250 Otway pipeline. The pipeline then further connects to the Otway gas plant from where the processed gas is sold to the Victorian gas market.

Construction of the wellsite facilities commenced in late 2022, with the pipeline construction following in January 2023. Reinstatement activities, marking the completion of the pipeline construction, were carried out in April 2024.

Otway gas plant details

Located near Port Campbell in south-west Victoria, Australia, the Otway gas plant has been operational since September 2007. The plant processes natural gas, condensate, and LPG from the offshore Otway basin fields.

The plant refines raw gas by separating hydrocarbon fluids into gas and liquid streams, removing CO2, water, hydrogen sulphide, and other impurities.

The liquid treatment units segregate the hydrocarbon liquids into stabilised condensate products such as propane and butane. The plant also includes on-site liquids storage and tanker loading facilities for these products.

Offtake agreements

In January 2024, Beach Energy entered a gas sales agreement (GSA) with Origin Energy to supply gas from the Enterprise field to the company until the end of 2026.

Origin Energy is an Australia-based electricity generator and retailer of electricity and natural gas.
