Zion Oil & Gas has commenced recompletion operations for the MJ-01 well in Israel, marking a significant move towards exploiting the country's onshore energy resources.
The recompletion of the MJ-01 well involves the use of advanced technologies and innovative stimulation techniques aimed at enhancing hydrocarbon flows in both previously and newly identified zones of interest.
This operation is part of a detailed work plan approved by the Israeli Ministry of Energy and is expected to continue through Q3 2024.
The well was originally drilled in 2018.
In December 2023, the Israeli Ministry of Energy formally approved Zion Oil & Gas’ detailed framework for the planned re-entry, production tests and recompletion of the MJ-01 well.
This work plan submission, a requirement under Israeli law, follows the acquisition of Megiddo Valleys Exploration Licence 434.
At that time, Zion Oil & Gas CEO Rob Dunn said: “Israel is open for business and we are grateful for the Israeli Government's green light on our workplan, allowing us to move ahead with the MJ-01 recompletion project.
“This is an exciting time for Zion as we implement cutting-edge technologies and stimulation methods to potentially unlock previous and newly identified zones of interest.”
Despite the conflict in Israel, Zion's operations have remained secure and largely on schedule. The embargo imposed by Turkey presented a major hurdle as it prevented the export of contracted equipment and materials to Israel.
The operations team, however, responded swiftly, sourcing necessary services from Romania, Greece and the US, minimising delays to the project timeline.
Considering these operational advancements, Zion Oil & Gas has extended its Unit Programme until 31 August 2024.
This extension allows investors additional time to support Zion's efforts towards Israel's energy independence.
Zion Oil & Gas operations vice-president Monty Kness said: “Our rig crew has assembled in Israel and will begin repair and maintenance on our drilling rig over the next couple of weeks.
“Afterwards, the crew will rig down and have the rig’s critical components inspected and recertified prior to moving over MJ-01 and rigging back up. This is estimated to take an additional two to three weeks. While this is ongoing, the crew will mobilise the equipment necessary to re-open the MJ-01 well.”
