Yinson, Azule team up on CCS facility for Angolan FPSO

The pilot-scale CCS facility will be used to assess “technical readiness and gain operational know-how”.

Yinson Production (YP) is collaborating with Azule Energy on a pioneering initiative to test an offshore carbon capture and storage (CCS) facility on Azule’s Agogo floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) in Angola.

The development marks a step towards the realisation of YP's Zero Emissions FPSO Concept, which aims to fast-track the decarbonisation of the offshore production sector.

The CCS facility will be the world’s first post-combustion carbon capture unit to be deployed onboard an FPSO.

The pilot-scale facility, which will act as a demonstration unit, will be used to assess “technical readiness and gain operational know-how”, Yinson stated.

In a press statement, Yinson said: “This marks an important step in implementing future scale-up of the CCS technology for YP’s Zero Emissions FPSO projects.”

The Agogo FPSO, in addition to the CCS plant, will feature emissions-lowering technologies including electrification, advanced automation and digitalisation, a combined-cycle power system, a hydrocarbon cargo tank blanketing scheme, a seawater turbine generator and an integrated closed flare system.

Yinson said that the Agogo FPSO’s combined onboard innovations will help reduce its carbon emissions while enhancing operational efficiency.

Carbon removal and energy EPC (engineering, procurement and construction) company Carbon Circle will be responsible for designing and constructing the CCS plant.

YP CEO Flemming Grønnegaard said: "As a top tier FPSO contractor, YP’s goal is to explore and provide sustainable energy solutions and make recommendations to our clients that will significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions from their operations.

“We are pleased that both YP and Azule are fully aligned in our commitment to implementing emission-reduction technologies such as the CCS plant onboard FPSO Agogo."

In February 2023, Azule awarded a contract to YP for the provision, operation and maintenance of the FPSO vessel for the Agogo Integrated West Hub Development Project in Angola.
