Australian engineering firm Worley has been selected by QatarEnergy LNG to provide front-end engineering design (FEED) services for the CO₂ sequestration project in Ras Laffan, Qatar.
Under the contract, the Australian firm will be responsible for developing the FEED study and providing engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) scope of work.
Worley’s teams in Qatar and Australia will carry out the project with completion planned in 2024.
In a press statement, Worley said: “Drawing in on expertise from our carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) centers of excellence, the project team will aim to prove the pre-FEED concept by modelling the CO₂ capture process.
“This high-level technical approach aims to further instill confidence to expand the CO₂ sequestration technology in the future to include the remaining trains at QatarEnergy LNG South and North.”
With a capacity to capture 4.3 million tonnes of CO₂ annually, the sequestration facility is expected to help QatarEnergy LNG in reducing emissions from its seven LNG trains at QG North and three LNG trains at QG South.
This will help QatarEnergy LNG in further reducing its environmental impact along the entire value chain.
The sequestration facility will be equipped to capture CO₂ from the trains and then compress it, prior to injecting into the new injection wells.
