On Monday (12 August) TotalEnergies announced that its maritime arm had supplied its first B100 biofuel bunker to Singapore on 5 August.

TotalEnergies Marine Fuels used an IMO Type II chemical bunker tanker to transfer 700 tonnes of the UCOME-based biofuel to Glovis Cosmos, a pure car and truck carrier owned by Hyundai Glovis.

The used cooking oil methyl ester biofuel is second-generation waste-based fuel sourced in South East Asia. The company’s circular economy approach minimises competition with arable land and is certified under the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification system.

TotalEnergies Marine Fuels has contributed to global biofuel bunkering operations in the past with delivery of very low sulphur fuel oil blended with UCOME-based biofuel of up to 30%.

This delivery marks the first time the company has supplied an entire quantity of fuel made up of biofuel. According to TotalEnergies Marine Fuels, the UCOME-based fuel has the potential to “cut greenhouse gas emissions by between 80% to 90% on a well-to-wake basis”.

Louise Tricoire, senior vice-president of aviation and marine fuels, TotalEnergies, said: “I am very pleased to see that our first 100% biofuel bunker was delivered safely and smoothly. The operation reinforces our commitment to supporting the shipping industry’s decarbonisation ambitions.

"We will continue to innovate and find sustainable low-carbon solutions for the shipping industry, which is navigating fast-changing market and regulatory conditions.”

TotalEnergies Marine Fuels has been performing biofuel pilot trials in collaboration with the Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonisation since 2022.
