Oil and gas industry services provider SLB has formed an investment and technology partnership with Geminus AI.

The alliance grants SLB rights to implement a physics-informed AI model builder tailored for the oil and gas sector.

SLB explained that the tool is designed to integrate physics-based methodologies with operational data, enabling the creation of scalable AI models.

The Geminus platform incorporates the physical constraints of the oil and gas industry into digital models through physics-informed AI computing.

It is said to operate with minimal data and allows for updates when new data is introduced.

The platform can be used by data scientists and engineers to predict complex system behaviours and make informed decisions.

In a practical application, SLB deployed a hybrid AI-driven solution at a natural gas facility to enhance economic outcomes while simultaneously reducing carbon emissions.

This solution, powered by Geminus' physics-informed AI and trained using data from SLB's Symmetry process simulation software, enables plant operators to assess the effects of process adjustments on both the environment and production efficiency.

SLB claims that the technology has also improved the efficiency of fluid catalytic crackers, a critical component in oil refineries, and boosted the performance of electric submersible pumps and industrial wellsite chokes.

SLB president, digital and integration Rakesh Jaggi said: “The investment made by SLB in its partnership with Geminus AI produces a step-change in operational performance for customers, from production pipelines to facilities.

“Geminus’ capability to fuse AI methods with physics-based simulation data will empower customers to quickly and easily create hybrid models of their operating assets that can be optimised in real time against numerous outcomes, such as opex reduction, increased productivity and carbon emissions minimisation.”

Geminus AI CEO Greg Fallon said: “With thousands of oil and gas processing facilities and complex well networks held by hundreds of different customers, SLB’s relationships and reach will help us deliver significant efficiency and productivity increases for customers.”
