Sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) is rapidly gaining prominence globally, with most of its production being planned through standalone renewable refineries.

Global SAF production capacity is expected to witness a remarkable growth period from 2020-2030, potentially increasing from 48 million gallons per annum in 2020 to 6,206 million gallons per annum in 2030.

A collection of projects mainly planned in North America, Europe, and Asia are expected to further drive this exceptional capacity growth by 2030.

To produce SAF, several crude oil refineries globally are being converted fully or partially into renewable refineries. However, global SAF production is primarily being planned through standalone renewable refineries.

The US is expected to witness the highest global SAF production capacity of 2,032 million gallons per annum from upcoming projects by 2030. Almost all of this upcoming capacity in the country is through standalone renewable refineries.

The UK follows the US with an estimated capacity of 445 million gallons per annum from upcoming renewable standalone refineries by 2030.

Meanwhile, China stands third with a capacity of 394 million gallons per annum from its two renewable standalone refineries - Maoming Renewable and Suining Renewable.
