QatarEnergy has announced a significant expansion of its North Field, aiming to boost the nation's LNG production capacity by at least 16mtpa.
This move is part of the new NFW project, which is set to elevate Qatar's LNG production capacity to 142mtpa by 2030.
QatarEnergy president and CEO Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi said this would mark an increase of nearly 85% compared with current production levels.
Once the NFW project is completed, Qatar's total hydrocarbon production is also expected to surpass 7.25 million barrels of oil equivalent per day.
QatarEnergy has commenced the basic engineering works for the NFW project.
Al-Kaabi also unveiled the discovery of additional gas reserves in the North Field, estimated at 240 trillion cubic feet (tcf), which boosts Qatar's gas reserves to more than 2,000tcf.
He said: “QatarEnergy has focused its efforts and attention on determining how far west the North Field’s productive layers extend in order to evaluate the production potential from those areas. We have continued geological and engineering studies and have drilled a number of appraisal wells in that area.
“I am pleased today to announce that, praise be to God, these great efforts have confirmed, through technical tests of the appraisal wells, the extension of the North Field’s productive layers further towards the west, which means the ability to produce significant additional quantities of gas from this new sector.”
The North Field, situated off Qatar's north-east coast, is reputed to be the world's largest single non-associated gas reservoir.
Discovered in 1971, it spans an area exceeding 6,000km².
Qatar is currently progressing with two other expansion phases at this vast gas field, known as North Field East and North Field South, which are projected to increase the country's nameplate LNG production capacity from 77mtpa to 126mtpa by 2026.
QatarEnergy has formed partnerships with industry giants such as China National Petroleum Corporation, ConocoPhillips, Eni, ExxonMobil, Shell, Sinopec and TotalEnergies for the initial two phases of the North Field expansion.
Furthermore, there are indications that the Middle Eastern nation may establish new partnerships for the continued expansion of the North Field project.
