Brazilian Government-backed oil and gas major Petrobras has formed a technology partnership with Norway’s Shearwater GeoServices.

Through the partnership, the companies aim to enhance seismic exploration and field developments in Brazil.

Shearwater’s marine vibratory technology, Project BASS, is key to the alliance.

According to the marine geophysical services provider, compared with conventional techniques its new seismic technology promises notable improvements in sound emissions reduction, seismic data quality and operational efficiency.

This long-term agreement will include the commercialisation of Shearwater's technology as well as related services for the offshore basins of Brazil, it added.

Cenpes Petrobras reservoir technology general manager Roberta Alves Mendes said: "This project aims to accelerate the exploration and development of the Brazilian fields, leveraging increased operational efficiency, innovative geophysical improvements and better control of seismic frequencies emitted in the Brazilian waters.”

Shearwater CEO Irene Waage Basili said: "This historic collaboration merges cutting-edge technology and innovation with our well-established business rapport with Petrobras in Brazil.

“The combination of this groundbreaking seismic source with our inhouse Pearl node technology, empowers Shearwater and Petrobras to elevate the standards of quality, efficiency and sustainability within the realm of seismic solutions.”

In September this year, Shearwater formed a partnership with Argeo, a robotics and digital solutions provider for the marine industry.

The companies aim to develop new technology and solutions for the subsea and marine seismic industry.

In July this year, Austrian oil and gas company OMV selected Shearwater to conduct survey work over the Berling gas and condensate discovery.

Beginning in the third quarter of 2026, OMV intends to drill three production wells at the Berling field on the Norwegian Continental Shelf.

Production from the field is expected to begin in 2028.
