Representatives of the Rantau Field, western Indonesia, operated by PT Pertamina EP (PEP), reported a fire on an oil well drilling platform in Bukit Tempurung Village over the weekend.

The incident in Kuala Simpang District, Aceh Tamiang, occurred while a maintenance operation was underway to improve oil production at the well, according to local media reports.

An investigation was launched after the incident resulted in four injuries, although none are thought to be life-threatening.

The injured men were members of the rig crew who sustained burns to their hands and feet and received medical care at Aceh Tamiang Regional Hospital.

Partner company Arjuna Asia Petrocom Services was reportedly carrying out the maintenance work to optimise output.

Edwin Susanto, the acting manager at Pertamina EP Rantau, added that Pertamina was “conducting a thorough investigation into this incident, but we can assure you that the fire has been successfully contained and monitoring of the location is continuing”.

He said the fire started at approximately 14:10 local time while the crew cleaned the production tubing. An emergency response team quickly arrived at the location, with the fire being extinguished less than an hour later.

According to a report from GlobalData, Offshore Technology’s parent company, the Rantau field has work areas in three districts and two provinces: Aceh Tamiang and East Aceh districts in Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam, and Langkat Regency in North Sumatra.

According to Rantau Pertamina EP Asset I's field manager Richard Muthalib, the oil production at Pertamina Field Rantau had reached 2,495bpd by 18 October 2017, which just exceeds the company’s output target, the report states.
