Halliburton Energy Services and Coterra Energy have launched an autonomous hydraulic fracturing technology in North America, together with the Octiv Auto Frac service, a component of Halliburton's ZEUS intelligent fracturing platform.

The Octiv Auto Frac service allows for the automation of stage delivery execution at the push of a button.

Coterra Energy is the first operator to fully automate and control its hydraulic fracturing design and execution.

Halliburton Production Enhancement vice-president Shawn Stasiuk said: "Octiv Auto Frac changes the game of completion performance.

“The service ensures that automation delivers consistent fracture execution [at] every stage while giving our customers the control they demand over their assets. The Octiv Auto Frac service is the first system to deliver on this promise.”

The Octiv Auto Frac service enhances the ZEUS platform, which includes electric pumping units and the Sensori fracture monitoring service.

Prior to this technology, fracture decisions were made manually during the pumping process.

Coterra can tailor the Octiv Auto Frac service to automatically execute designs according to their precise specifications, streamlining the entire fracturing process.

The initial launch of this service resulted in a 17% boost in stage efficiency. Encouraged by these results, Coterra has expanded the use of the Octiv Auto Frac service across its completion programmes in the Permian Basin, executed by Halliburton.

Coterra CEO Tom Jorden said: “Coterra remains focused on maximising efficiencies and exploring new opportunities to improve our operations. The deployment of intelligent automation for hydraulic fracturing helps us execute stages consistently and provides us with more autonomy and control over the completion process.”

In December 2024, Halliburton launched the Intelli suite of diagnostic well intervention wireline logging services to improve collaboration with customers, enhance well insights, boost production, extend asset life and lower operational costs.
