China is set to dominate acetic acid capacity additions globally through 2028, contributing more than 90% of the total capacity additions from seven new builds and an expansion project, according to research from GlobalData.

The research reveals that China is likely to see additions of 6.70 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) between 2024 and 2028.

Nivedita Roy, oil and gas analyst at GlobalData, said: “Acetic acid, commonly referred to as ethanoic acid, is an important chemical reagent that finds wide applications across multiple industries such as textiles, plastics, and pharmaceuticals.”

He added that the “rapid expansion of these sectors in China is driving the demand for acetic acid in the country.”

In China, the highest capacity addition is from the Guangdong Shengyuanda Technology Jieyang Acetic Acid Plant, with a capacity of 1.50mtpa.

The plant is currently under construction, and it is expected to commence production in 2026. Guangdong Shengyuanda Technology Co Ltd owns 100% of the stake in the plant and is also the operator of the project.

The Zhejiang Petrochemical Ineos Jv Daishan Acetic Acid Plant and ShengHong Holding Group Lianyungang Acetic Acid Plant follow next, with a capacity of 1.0mtpa each.

They are expected to start operations in 2026 and 2028, respectively.

The latest report is titled Acetic Acid Industry Capacity and Capital Expenditure Forecasts with Details of All Active and Planned Plants to 2028, and is available now.
