Oil and gas major BP has awarded a three-year operations services contract to Petrofac for the GTA project. 

The multi-million-dollar contract encompasses a broad range of services including onshore and offshore management and supervision, personnel provision and equipment maintenance. 

Straddling the maritime border of Mauritania and Senegal, the GTA project is an LNG development.  

bp is the operator of the GTA project, with Societe des Petroles du Senegal (Petrosen), Societe Mauritanienne des Hydrocarbures (SMH) and Kosmos Energy as partners.  

The final investment decision for the project's phase one development was made in December 2018. 

In phase one, the project is anticipated to produce 2.3 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) of LNG.  

Furthermore, in February 2023, bp and its partners unveiled the development concept for phase two, which is expected to yield up to 3mtpa of LNG upon commissioning.  

According to bp's latest update in August 2023, the phase one start-up of the GTA project is projected for the first quarter of 2024, a slight delay from the previous date at the end of 2023. 

The latest contract builds on the earlier partnership between bp and Petrofac on the GTA project. 

BP vice-president of production for Mauritania and Senegal Rebecca King said: “Petrofac already supplies the GTA project with deck crew services. This award to supply mechanical handling services across our nearshore and deep-water facilities can only strengthen our relationship.” 

Petrofac asset solutions business chief operating officer Nick Shorten said: “Having supplied operation services for the floating production storage and offloading vessel and liquefied natural gas hub since 2022, and developed operational procedures in 2021, this additional scope demonstrates bp’s confidence in Petrofac and supports our selective geographic expansion strategy.”
