Asia set to drive global propylene capacity additions by 2028

Asia is expected to add a capacity of 35.53mtpa from 57 new build, planned and announced projects.

Global propylene capacity is poised to see considerable growth over the next four years, potentially increasing from 160.02 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) in 2023 to 215.16mtpa in 2028, registering a total growth of 34.5%. Globally, 142 planned and announced propylene projects are expected to come online by 2028 predominantly in Asia followed by the Middle East.

Asia is expected to add a capacity of 35.53mtpa from 57 new build, planned and announced projects. As for capacity expansions, the region is expected to add a capacity of 0.18mtpa from three planned projects.

Within Asia, the majority of propylene capacity additions are from upcoming projects in China, with a total capacity of 26.98mtpa. The highest capacity addition in the country is from a planned project, "Shandong Yulong Petrochemical Longkou Propylene Plant 1". It is expected to commence operations in 2024 with a capacity of 2.30mtpa. India and Indonesia are also likely to witness significant capacity additions in the region with 4.18mtpa and 2.31mtpa, respectively.

In the Middle East, a total capacity addition of 11.90mtpa is anticipated from 20 planned and six announced projects. “Sasa Polyester Sanayi Yumurtalik Propylene Plant 1” and “Sasa Polyester Sanayi Yumurtalik Propylene Plant 2” account for the highest capacity addition in the region. Both are located in Turkey and are projected to come online, each with a capacity of 1mtpa. “Advanced Petrochemical Company Al-Jubail Propylene Plant 2”, - a planned project in Saudi Arabia also represents a significant capacity addition in the region with 0.85mtpa.
