GlobalData Energy March 14 2024

Global acrylonitrile capacity is poised to see considerable growth over the next five years, potentially increasing from 9.55mtpa (million tonnes per annum) in 2023 to 12.25mtpa in 2028, registering a total growth of 28%. Globally, 13 planned and announced acrylonitrile projects are expected to come online by 2028 predominantly in Asia followed by the Middle East over the next five years.

Asia is expected to add a capacity of 1.97mtpa from seven new build planned projects. Within Asia, the major capacity addition is from 'Zhejiang Petrochemical Daishan Acrylonitrile Plant 2' with a capacity of 0.66mtpa. Zhejiang Petrochemical has a 100% stake in the plant and is also the operator. It is expected to commence production in 2026 in Zhejiang, China.

Middle East follows next with a capacity addition of 0.73mtpa from two plants in Saudi Arabia and Turkey. The announced project in Saudi Arabia, ‘Ineos Al-Jubail Acrylonitrile Plant,’ leads the capacity additions with 0.43mtpa. It is expected to come online in 2027.

The planned project, ‘Sasa Polyester Sanayi Yumurtalik Acrylonitrile Plant’ in Turkey, follows next, with a capacity of 0.30mtpa. It is expected to commence production of acrylonitrile in 2028.
