Oil and gas major Wintershall Dea has signed a contract with AI Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) company Cognite to scale digitalisation efforts across its assets.

Under the four-year contract, Wintershall Dea will use Cognite’s flagship SaaS product Cognite Data Fusion (CDF) to drive digitalisation solutions.

As part of the strategic digital collaboration, the oil and gas firm will deploy Cognite SaaS and associated applications across its assets.

Cognite CEO and co-founder John Markus said: “We will be equipping Wintershall Dea’s domain experts with applications that will give them instant access to data, helping to improve maintenance and production optimisation.

“We will also provide their IT department with a number of building blocks and tools, which will enable them to scale and sustain digital solutions across assets.”

Wintershall Dea will use CDF for data contextualisation and for the activation of AI. CDF will connect numerous data types together in order to address optimisation, as well as enable advanced visualisations.

By using various tools and Cognite business applications, Wintershall Dea will further enhance its digital portfolio in order to provide data insights that empower colleagues both in the office and in the field.

Wintershall Dea chief technology officer Hugo Dijkgraaf said: “We strive to make smart investments through developing digital products and scaling them up to deliver the highest returns to our E&P business as measured by gains in safety, sustainability, operational and financial performance.

“Based on the positive results and impact we had at our Mittelplate oil field, we are pleased to deepen our digitalisation activities with Cognite to provide foundations to scale solutions across our assets.”

In 2018, energy firm DEA partnered with Cognite to add new technology to its Mittelplate oilfield in Germany that enhances efficiency and improves maintenance.

In July last year, Wintershall Dea and ConocoPhillips signed an agreement to jointly develop the Aguada Federal and Bandurria Norte blocks in Neuquén, Argentina.
