By GlobalDataThe unit will later be connected to Air Liquide’s hydrogen network to optimise its performance, TotalEnergies said.
The two firms are also planning to develop a carbon capture and storage (CCS) project that would decarbonise the hydrogen produced at the Normandy platform.
As part of this effort, Air Liquide would help in reducing CO₂ emitted by TotalEnergies’ hydrogen production unit at the site using its Cryocap carbon capture technology.
TotalEnergies will be responsible for transportation and storage process of the captured CO₂, through projects including Norway’s Northern Lights and the Aramis CCS project in the Netherlands.
The project is expected help in reducing CO₂ emissions from the hydrogen unit by around 650,000t per year by 2030.
TotalEnergies refining and chemicals president and executive committee member Bernard Pinatel said: “This planned investment at our Normandy platform will enhance its industrial competitiveness and secure its long-term future.
“These projects contribute to the collective effort launched in the Le Havre industrial zone and the Axe Seine. This is fully aligned with TotalEnergies’ ambition to get to net zero emissions by 2050.”
The cooperation is aligned with the two firm’s aim to help decarbonise industrial operations in the ‘Axe Seine/Normandy’.
Air Liquide Group executive committee member supervising Europe industries activities and executive vice president François Jackow said: “In line with our objective to reach carbon neutrality by 2050, Air Liquide is acting now to develop low-carbon and renewable hydrogen production and build a more sustainable future.”
In July 2021, the two parties agreed to develop carbon capture and storage infrastructure in Normandy to reduce CO₂ emissions by up to three million tonnes per year by 2030.
