Indian holiday travel in December prompted a substantial increase in demand for gasoline and diesel in the country, according to data from several refineries, as reported by local media outlets.
Gasoline saw an almost 10% increase on the month, hitting just under three million tonnes, while diesel demand was up by 5% to seven million tonnes.
The data indicated that the increasing demand came after months of lower-level consumption, with the monsoon season and less agricultural production limiting demand.
Diesel is the most consumed fuel in India, accounting for as much as 40% of oil-based product consumption, mostly within the transport sector.
Back in August, the nation’s fuel consumption fell by more than 2% on the year, with diesel demand once again hit due to above-normal monsoon rains.
And in the month prior, the Indian Government revealed that it had allocated approximately Rs75bn ($895.74m) for seismic data acquisition and drilling of stratigraphic wells.
