UK-based SDX Energy has decided to abandon the ELQ-1 well in the Gharb Centre permit, Morocco, after failing to achieve desired results from a drilling campaign.

Drilled to a total depth of 1,484m, the well has encountered 22.6 net metres of reservoir interval and two metres of marginal net conventional gas pay in the Hoot formation.

The company attributed the decision to not being able to obtain sufficiently commercial intervals to complete the well.

As a result, the well will be plugged and abandoned.

Meanwhile, the company is set to move the drilling rig to the ONZ-7 development location.

SDX Energy president and CEO Paul Welch said: “Despite the result at ELQ-1, we remain very upbeat about the remainder of our Moroccan drilling campaign, which has already yielded discoveries from the first three of this nine well campaign.

In a separate development, the company has connected the KSR-16 well to the sales line and expects to begin flow testing next week.

Additionally, SDX has secured a four-month extension to its Lalla Mimouna permit, through to 22 July this year.

The company noted that the extension will offer enough time to evaluate the results of its upcoming exploration drilling campaign on the permit, set to take place in March this year.
