Oilfield services company Schlumberger, technology company IBM and multinational software company Red Hat have formed a strategic collaboration to accelerate digital transformation in the oil and gas (O&G) industry.

Through this joint initiative, more customers will gain global access to Schlumberger’s Cloud-based environment and its cognitive applications for exploration and production (E&P).

According to the companies, this is possible through the use of IBM’s hybrid Cloud architecture built on the Red Hat OpenShift container platform.

The collaboration will initially focus on two areas.

The first one is to extend customer access to the DELFI cognitive E&P environment in any geographic location in the world through the Schlumberger’s use of the Red Hat OpenShift.

Meanwhile, the second focus area is delivering the first hybrid Cloud implementation of the OSDU data platform, which is an open data platform for the energy market.

Schlumberger CEO Olivier Le Peuch said: “By expanding market access to the DELFI environment, we take a major step forward on the journey to establishing the open and flexible digital environment our industry needs.”

Schlumberger will exclusively use the Red Hat OpenShift through the agreement with IBM and Red Hat.

IBM CEO Arvind Krishna said: “The logic, purpose, and differentiation of all businesses can now be rendered in code, which is why digital innovation has become the most powerful way to drive transformation and hybrid cloud is the lever that unleashes it.

“Together with Schlumberger, we are empowering a much broader group of participants to play a role in driving that transformation and helping the energy industry solve some of the world’s toughest challenges to emerge stronger.”

In June this year, Schlumberger launched the ‘Performance Live’ service that optimises remote wellsite operations control and improves safety, efficiency and footprint.
