British oil exploration and production firm Premier Oil has discovered new gas at the Tolmount East well, 42/28d-14, in P1330, Block 42/28d in the UK Southern Gas Basin.

Premier owns 50% interest in the Block 42/28d.

The Tolmount East well targeted 220 billion cubic feet (bcf) gas of P50 gross resource, in an undrilled area 4km east of the 500bcf Tolmount gas field. Premier said that the well has cut some 241ft of gas bearing Leman sands with a net-to-gross ratio of 71%, porosity of 16% as well as 82% gas saturation.

The quality and thickness of reservoir sands were seen at the upper end of expectations. Premier mentioned that no gas water contact was penetrated.

The company undertook a full logging-while-drilling and wireline acquisition programme, which included extensive pressure data and fluid sampling.  The reservoir section has successfully cored 216ft gas recovery.

Premier CEO Tony Durrant said: “We are delighted with this commercial discovery at Tolmount East, the development of which will add significant value to our UK portfolio.

“Elsewhere in the Greater Tolmount Area, we are making excellent progress with our sanctioned Tolmount development which remains on schedule for first gas by the end of next year and will add a net 20,000 to 25,000 boepd to Group production.”

The well data will now be combined with the new 3D seismic dataset under the fast-track development planning. Project sanction for Tolmount East is anticipated in the second half of 2020.

Premier highlighted that the result is also positive for other targets within the Greater Tolmount area, including Tolmount Far East target and the Mongour discovery.
