Venture Global’s Plaquemines plant has dispatched its inaugural cargo of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Germany, marking a milestone in the US role as a leading LNG exporter.

The company’s LNG carrier, Venture Bayou, has embarked from Louisiana towards Germany.

Venture Bayou is a part of Venture Global’s fleet of nine new LNG vessels and is en route to deliver the first LNG cargo produced at the Plaquemines export plant to German utility company EnBW.

Venture Global has contributed to the energy supply in Germany, having sent over 60 LNG cargoes since 2022.

According to LSEG’s ship tracking data, Venture Bayou is expected to arrive in Brunsbuttel, Germany, by 8 January 2025.

The US has emerged as the world’s largest LNG exporter, with Europe relying more on American gas post-Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The Plaquemines project, like Venture Global’s Calcasieu Pass facility, has commenced exports ahead of schedule, surpassing the US Department of Energy’s seven-year requirement from the Non-FTA export authorisation.

Venture Global CEO Mike Sabel said: “In just five years, Venture Global has built, produced and launched exports from two large-scale LNG projects which has never been done before in the history of the industry.”

Venture Global operates two plants in Louisiana, including the 20Mtpa Plaquemines facility, which recently started LNG production.

Plaquemines LNG made its final investment decision for phase one in May 2022 and for phase two in March 2023.

The ongoing development at Plaquemines will allow the plant to produce and export LNG while the remaining 36 trains and associated facilities are completed.

Once fully operational, Plaquemines is set to be one of the world’s largest LNG plants, reinforcing the US position as the top LNG exporter.
