Petrobras has announced that its 2024 production of gasoline and S-10 diesel has surpassed historical records.

The state-owned oil company reported that the total volume of gasoline produced reached 24.4 billion litres, exceeding the previous record set in 2014 by 200 million litres.

S-10 diesel production also broke the 2023 record, reaching 26.3 billion litres.

The volume of oil processed from the pre-salt region marked an achievement, accounting for 70% of Petrobras’ total oil processing, an increase from the 66% annual average in 2023.

The annual refinery utilisation factor (FUT) rose to 93.2% last year, up from 92% in 2023.

The FUT is calculated based on the volume of oil processed relative to the refineries’ reference capacity, considering asset project limits, safety, environmental standards, and the quality of the oil derivatives produced.

The performance improvements have been attributed to the reliability and availability of refining plants, indicating a more efficient utilisation of refineries.

This was made possible through the integrated planning of Petrobras’ various segments, including refining, transportation, marketing, petrochemical, and fertiliser.

In addition to production achievements, Petrobras has also made strides in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

In 2024, the company achieved its lowest emissions intensity since 2019, recording 36.1kg CO₂ per equivalent load.

This prevented the burning of 475,000m³/day of natural gas and avoided 365,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions comparable to removing more than 6,000 diesel-powered buses or 60,000 petrol-powered cars from the roads.

Last December, Petrobras started operating the SNOX unit at the Abreu e Lima refinery (RNEST) in Ipojuca, Pernambuco, Brazil.

This emissions reduction unit, the first of its kind in Brazil and the Americas, converts sulphur oxide (SOₓ) and nitrogen oxide (NOₓ) into sulfuric acid.

The initiative aims to increase the refinery’s processing capacity from 88,000bpd to 115,000bpd while complying with environmental regulations.
