French engineering company Technip Oceania (TPO) has secured a €90m contract for the detailed design of Chevron‘s Wheatstone offshore gas processing platform located 200km off the coast of Western Australia.
The contract, which was awarded by Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME), represents a breakthrough for TPO, which will be leading the work and performing some 40% locally in Australia.
TPO managing director Frans Roozendaal said: "The Wheatstone Platform is one of the largest offshore platforms ever built, and I am proud that we have been able to deliver the design for DSME from our Australian operation."
The upstream portion of Wheatstone comprises the development offshore gas fields in the licensed WA-17-R and WA-253-P areas on Australia’s North West Shelf in depths of 70-200m.
Subsea gas gathering systems will transport production to the processing platform where the gas and condensate will be treated. It will then be exported to the onshore gas plant in Ashburton North, 12km west of Onslow, on the Pilbara coast of mainland Western Australia.
The French engineering firm has already completed FEED work for the project awarded by Chevron in 2009. DSME project manager KH Lee said it had been useful to work in Technip’s Australian office to lead this work.

Technip’s operating centres in Perth, Australia, and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, will carry out the contract, which is scheduled to be complete in the second half of 2012.
