JX Nippon Exploration and Production (UK) has contracted Odfjell Drilling’s semi-submersible rig Deepsea Stavanger to drill a well west of Shetland on the UK Continental Shelf.

Odfjell Drilling CEO Simen Lieungh said: "The contract with JX Nippon secures interim utilisation of Deepsea Stavanger before start-up of the Wintershall drilling contract in 2017.

"We have a fleet of high-performing rigs with a strong track record that gives us confidence in our market position even if the competition is tougher than ever."

The contract is expected to begin in the second quarter of 2016 and would be carried out for 60 to 75 days.

The unit also has a contract with Wintershall on the Maria field on the Norwegian Continental Shelf beginning early 2017.
