Gazprom Neft has commenced geological investigations in Paleozoic hydrocarbon deposits in the Tomsk Oblast in an attempt to add 25 million tonnes of recoverable reserves and more than one billion tonnes of hydrocarbons in place from the region.

The company noted that investigations into the complex structure of the pre-Jurassic complex should comprise modification of traditional prospecting methodologies.

Through the project, the company aims to determine optimum methods for investigating oil-bearing Paleozoic deposits, resulting in improved efficiency in geological prospecting and reduced costs.

The project is also expected to enable the company to create technologies by combining information gathered through theoretical and experimental approaches, as well as scientifically adapting and modifying these in accordance with the geology of the complex.

Gazprom Neft Bazhenov project executive director Kirill Strizhnev said: “Paleozoic deposits have never been considered a target for geological prospecting. Deposits in sediments of this age have, mainly, been found opportunistically, while exploring other oil and gas-bearing formations.

According to the company, significant studies have been conducted until now on the Paleozoic section and research is necessary to identify new features and patterns.

Three characteristic zones have been identified within the Tomsk Oblast and the company plans to carry out an investigation involving drilling of six wells between now and 2019.

Gazprom indicated that investigations through the first well are in progress.
