A gas pipeline explosion in north-eastern China has resulted in the death of five people and injured 89 others, according to the official Xinhua news agency.

The blast occurred near a hospital in Songyuan city in Jilin province, and comes after a separate natural gas pipeline explosion in southwest China's Guizhou Province earlier this week, which killed around eight people and injured a further 35.

Xinhua noted that the accident stemmed from a leakage that occurred during repair works that were being conducted on a section of the pipeline.

The explosion reportedly affected patients and staff at the hospital.

Rescuers were pressed into service following the accident, and an investigation has been initiated to determine the cause of the incident. The owner of the pipeline has not been disclosed.

The pipeline that exploded in Guizhou Province earlier this week was operated by China National Petroleum.
