Kuwait Oil Company (KOC) has announced a significant discovery of light oil and associated gas in the offshore Al-Nokhatha field.
In a statement to the Kuwait News Agency, KOC said that the field, located east of Kuwait’s Failaka Island, covers an estimated area of 96km² and is a major step forward in Kuwait’s marine hydrocarbon exploration efforts.
The Al-Nokhatha well is currently producing approximately 2,800 barrels of light oil and seven million cubic feet of associated gas daily.
KOC’s Preliminary estimates of the reserves are around 2.1bbbl of light oil and 5.1tcf of gas, which equates to roughly 3.2 billion barrels of oil equivalent.
These findings suggest significant potential for further resource enhancement in the field’s various layers and reservoirs, KOC noted.
The marine exploration project was initiated based on two-dimensional seismic surveys, and geophysical and geological studies to identify optimal drilling sites and prepare for logistical operations.

By GlobalDataThe marine area, around one-third of Kuwait’s land area and covering more than 6,000km², will see six exploratory wells drilled in its first phase, with future stages contingent on drilling outcomes.
Following initial test results, KOC plans to develop the field and begin production to enhance its capacity and support the achievement of its 2040 strategy.
In October 2023, Kuwait’s Oil Minister, Saad Al Barrak, outlined a strategy to increase the nation’s oil and gas production.
In line with Kuwait Petroleum Corporation’s 2040 vision, the nation is targeting a production capacity of four million barrels per day by 2035.
