Equinor, alongside partners Var Energi and Petoro, plans to start oil production at the Johan Castberg field in the Barents Sea before February 2025.
The field, situated approximately 100km north of the Snøhvit field, is poised to bolster oil production in the region.
The Johan Castberg field’s development is built upon three major oil discoveries: Skrugard, Havis and Drivis, all located within production licence 532.
With a projected operational lifespan of 30 years, the field’s infrastructure includes a floating production, storage and offloading vessel (FPSO), complemented by a comprehensive subsea system featuring 30 wells across ten subsea templates and two satellite structures.
The FPSO was anchored at the Johan Castberg field in September and has since been connected to the subsea facilities.
Equinor drilling and procurement projects executive vice-president Geir Tungesvik said: “Norway’s role as a reliable and long-term energy supplier will be strengthened when Johan Castberg comes on stream.

By GlobalData“The field opens a new province for oil recovery and will be an important starting point for several opportunities in the Barents Sea. We have made new discoveries that we are in the process of turning into future tie-backs to Johan Castberg.”
The project is now entering its final phase before the anticipated start-up. The expected recoverable resources from the field are estimated at between 450 and 650 million barrels of oil equivalent.
To date, 14 wells have been drilled at the Johan Castberg field, with 12 prepared for production. This is deemed sufficient to achieve plateau production, estimated at 220,000 barrels per day.
The field’s introduction is set to make a substantial contribution to the region’s oil output, with estimated recoverable volumes of oil ranging from 450 to 650 million barrels.
Tungesvik said: “We are now in the final phase of completion. The operations have been somewhat delayed by bad weather. Our plan is to start up Johan Castberg in January/February 2025.”
