GAZ-SYSTEM, Poland’s designated natural gas transmission system operator (TSO), has unveiled plans to modernise the Hermanowice gas metering station.

This decision follows technical discussions with the Ukrainian gas TSO about the GCP GAZ-SYSTEM/UA TSO interconnection.

The upgrade aims to optimise Poland’s transmission system capacity, particularly towards Ukraine.

The project includes enhancing the metering and billing capabilities of the Hermanowice facility.

The available capacity will be continuously assessed, with offers depending on supply directions, export route utilisation and demand in Poland’s southern regions, especially in the power sector.

The scope of the modernisation and the relocation of the metering process from Drozdovychi to Hermanowice have been agreed upon by the involved parties.

The works are scheduled for completion by late 2025 or early 2026.

In a related development, Orlen and Naftogaz of Ukraine signed a second natural gas supply contract last month.

This agreement ensures the delivery of approximately 100 million cubic metres of US-sourced natural gas, starting in April.

The liquefied natural gas (LNG) cargo will be delivered to Poland’s Świnoujście LNG terminal for regasification, from where the natural gas will be transported to the Polish-Ukrainian border to ensure a steady supply for Ukrainian consumers.

Additionally, GAZ-SYSTEM completed the expansion of the Świnoujście LNG terminal in January this year.

The expansion programme was divided into two phases, with the first phase increasing the regasification capacity to 6.2 billion cubic metres (bcm) with additional SCVs and a metering skid.

The second phase added a third tank, a second jetty and a transmission pipeline to enhance the terminal’s flexibility and operational capacity.

These improvements increased the terminal’s annual regasification capacity to 8.3bcm, enabling it to handle larger LNG volumes and provide bunkering services.
