Italian oil and gas company Eni has announced that its Zohr gas field in Egypt is currently producing two billion cubic feet per day (bcfd), equivalent to about 365,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day (boed).
This significant production was achieved just a few months after the first gas was produced in last December and one year ahead of the scheduled plan of development.
According to the firm, this production level was realised due to the commencement of the fifth production unit, supported by the eight gas producers and a new sea line, commissioned last month.
Furthermore, the level of production is claimed to confirm the programme pursued by Eni, its partner Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company (EGAS) and their joint venture firm Petrobel that aimed for an excess of 2.7 bcfd in 2019.
Located within the offshore Shorouk block, 190km north of Port Said, the Zohr gas field is one of largest deepwater gas fields offshore Egypt. It is said to be the biggest discovery in the Mediterranean Sea with an approximate 850 billion cubic metres (30 trillion cubic feet) of reserves.
In the Shorouk Block, Eni has a 50% stake, with Russia’s Rosneft holding 30%, UK’s BP 10% and the UAE’s Mubadala Petroleum having 10% of the contractor’s share.
