Italian company Eni has made a gas discovery in Block 6 off the coast of Cyprus, confirming the extension of the ‘Zohr like’ play in the country’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ).
The Calypso 1 NFW well was drilled in 2,074m of water depth and reached a final total depth of 3,827m.

According to the company, the drilling campaign resulted in an extended gas column in rocks of Miocene and Cretaceous age, with the latter sequence having ‘excellent reservoir characteristics’.
The company has already executed a detailed data collection of fluids and rock samples on the well.
In order to evaluate the range of the gas volumes in place and define further exploration and appraisal operations, further studies will be undertaken.
Block 6 is operated by Eni with a 50% participating interest.

Claimed to be the largest gasfield in the Mediterranean, Zohr produced first gas in December last year.
Located offshore Egypt and spread over 100km², the field has potential gas resources of 850 billion cubic metres, amounting to around 5.5 billion barrels of oil equivalent.
