Italian oil and gas company Eni has made a new oil discovery in Block 15/06 in the Kalimba exploration prospect, located offshore Angola.
The discovery was made while drilling the Kalimba-1 NFW well by the West Gemini drillship.
Situated nearly 150km from the coast and nearly 50km south-east from the Armada Olombendo FPSO (East Hub), the well reached a total depth of 1,901m, proving a 23m net oil pay of high-quality oil (33° API) at the Upper Miocene sandstone.
The discovery is also stated to exhibit excellent petrophysical properties and may encourage further exploration in the southern part of Block 15/06, which was earlier considered to be gas-prone.
Estimated to host around 230 and 300 million barrels of light oil, the resource can support a production capacity of more than 5,000 barrels of oil per day.
The Eni-operated joint venture associated with the project will now work to assess the up-dip of the discovery, as well as work to facilitate its development.

Block 15/06 hosts West hub and East Hub oil development projects with a combined production of nearly 150,000 barrels of oil per day.
Furthermore, additional resources in the Block 15/06 are expected to be online this year including the Upper Miocene in the East Hub and the Subsea Boosting System for the Mpungi field.
The Vandumbu field, which will be connected to the West Hub, is scheduled to commence production at the end of this year.
After these fields become online, the total oil production from the Block 15/06 is expected to increase by 30,000 barrels.
