Denmark is considering increasing natural gas production, temporarily, from its fields in the North Sea to reduce its dependence on Russia energy, reported Reuters.
The move forms part of the country’s long-term plan to become independent of Russian supplies in the wake of Moscow’s military war against Ukraine.
Denmark Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen told reporters: “We will increase production of natural gas in the North Sea for a limited time period.
“We are convinced it’s better to produce gas in the North Sea than buying it from [Russian President] Vladimir Putin.”
According to the new energy proposal presented by the Danish government, the country plans to start talks with the companies operating in the Danish North Sea, and pledged to accelerate administrative processes to boost production, reported Bloomberg News.

Denmark is currently undertaking planned upgrade works at Tyra, the country’s biggest North Sea field.
Upon completion of the upgrade work next year, Denmark is expected to attain more than enough gas to become self-sufficient.
Frederiksen added: “Until the production of green gas is large enough to cover the need for gas, it’s our clear belief that it’s better to source gas from the North Sea than to buy it from Putin.”
The government is looking to further increase the output to help European nations in reducing their reliance on Russian gas, according to the report.
Frederiksen was cited by Reuters as saying: “But since we are part of the European gas network, we also need the other countries to become independent.”
Denmark Climate and Energy Minister Dan Jorgensen said that the country’s production from existing North Sea gas fields could be increased by as much as 25% “in the short term”.
Last year, the country unveiled plans to reach 3.2 billion cubic metres of peak gas production capacity in 2027.
