The Government of Victoria in Australia has awarded a contract to AGR Australia to manage its CarbonNet Offshore Appraisal Well Drilling Programme for the entire lifecycle.

As part of the deal, AGR will be responsible for well engineering and design, as well as the supervision and execution.

Additionally, the company will also manage both the health and safety and regulatory aspects of the CarbonNet project, which is investigating the potential for establishing a large-scale carbon capture and storage (CCS) network.

The CCS network would bring together multiple carbon dioxide (CO2) capture projects in the Australian state’s Latrobe Valley, transporting CO2 through a shared pipeline and injecting it into deep underground, offshore storage sites in Gippsland.

“By contracting AGR to provide well management services, CarbonNet will benefit from our highly experienced personnel and our tried and tested well delivery process.”

Designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and help address climate change, CCS involves capturing CO2 released by industrial processes, compressing it and storing it deep underground.

AGR APAC Business Development manager Andy Perchard said: “We are very pleased to have been selected as CarbonNets Well Management contractor for Australia’s first offshore CO2 storage well. AGR has an unrivalled track record in well management, having drilled more than 50 wells in Australia and 530 globally.

“By contracting AGR to provide well management services, CarbonNet will benefit from our highly experienced personnel and our tried and tested well delivery process.”

According to the company, CCS is claimed to offer a safe, long-term solution to the problem of CO2 emissions.
