1PointFive, a carbon capture, utilisation and sequestration unit of Occidental, has signed an agreement with Enterprise Products Partners to establish a CO₂ transportation network.

The network will facilitate the Bluebonnet sequestration hub that 1PointFive is developing in southeast Texas.

The transportation services agreement stipulates that upon notification by 1PointFive, Enterprise will construct a new pipeline network.

1PointFive is advancing the creation of carbon sequestration hubs, drawing on Occidental’s five-decade expertise in CO₂ management.

These hubs are designed to contribute significantly to industrial decarbonisation efforts.

1PointFive sequestration president Jeff Alvarez stated: “We are excited to reach this milestone and look forward to collaborating with Enterprise to build a CO₂ transportation network for our sequestration hub, which is designed to provide a reliable and efficient way for hard-to-abate sectors to address their CO₂ emissions.

“This agreement pairs our expertise managing large volumes of CO₂ with Enterprise’s decades of midstream experience to bring confidence to industrial customers seeking a decarbonisation solution.”

The network will provide fee-based transportation services, enabling the conveyance of CO₂ emissions captured by third parties near the Houston Ship Channel to 1PointFive’s Bluebonnet sequestration hub.

The planned pipeline network will utilise the route of existing pipeline infrastructure, optimising the use of space and resources.

Enterprise’s general partner asset optimisation executive vice-president Bob Sanders stated: “This project with 1PointFive builds upon the strong working relationship we have had with Occidental for many years.

“By leveraging our proven midstream expertise and integrated network of assets, we are well positioned to provide a reliable and cost-efficient CO₂ transportation solution.”

Significantly, the Bluebonnet Sequestration Hub by 1PointFive recently secured funding from the US Department of Energy (DOE). This investment aims to bolster the hub’s development and harness the full potential of carbon sequestration in the US.

1PointFive also secured funding of up to $500m from the DOE’s Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations for its South Texas Direct Air Capture Hub in September 2024.
