The global oil & gas industry noticed a 0.5% decline in IT hiring activity in April 2021 over the previous month, led by Exxon Mobil’s 13.51% share, according to GlobalData’s Jobs Analytics database.
The oil & gas industry’s overall hiring activity declined 3.64% when compared with March 2021.

Noticeably, IT jobs accounted for a 5.14% share of the global oil & gas industry’s hiring activity in April 2021, up 0.33% over the last three-month average share.
According to GlobalData, IT job opportunities available at the end of April 2021 were 3.43% higher compared with the previous month.
The increase was a result of 5.7% lower job postings as compared to job closures during the month.
Software and Web Developers, Programmers, and Testers drive oil & gas IT hiring activity
Software and Web Developers, Programmers, and Testers with a share of 53.21% emerged as the top IT occupation in the oil & gas hiring activity in April 2021, a 9.72% decline over the previous month. Miscellaneous Computer Occupations came in second with a share of 14.73% in April 2021, up 16.76% over the previous month.
The other prominent IT roles include Database and Network Administrators and Architects with a 12.21% share in April 2021, decline of 24.79% over the previous month, and Computer and Information Analysts with a 9.41% share in April 2021 and drop of 6.12% over March 2021.
Top five oil & gas companies by recruitment activity in April 2021
The top five companies, in terms of number of jobs as tracked by GlobalData, accounted for a combined average an increase of 0.37% share in the overall IT recruitment activity of global oil & gas industry during April 2021 over March 2021.
Exxon Mobil posted 198 IT jobs in April 2021 and registered a drop of 17.15% over the previous month, followed by Royal Dutch Shell with 122 jobs and a 40.23% rise. Yara International with 81 IT jobs and Reliance Industries with 72 jobs, recorded a 2.53% an increase and a 67.44% growth, respectively, while Baker Hughes Holdings recorded a 26.74% drop with 63 job postings during April 2021.
Regional composition of IT hiring in oil & gas industry
North America emerged as the leading region in the global oil & gas IT hiring activity in April 2021 with a 33.97% share, which marked a 7.43% drop over the previous month.
Asia-Pacific stood next with 33.29%, registering a 1.21% month-on-month decline.Europe was the third leading region with a 21.28% share and a 21.61% decline over March 2021.
In the fourth place was South & Central America with a share of 9.75% and a month-on-month drop of 22.28%. Middle East & Africa stood at the bottom of the table with a share of 1.71%, registering a 21.88% drop over the previous month.
