GlobalData’s latest report indicates that global small-scale liquefied natural gas (LNG) liquefaction capacity is expected to grow by 58% during the outlook period 2019–2023. This represents a rise from 26,540 thousand tonnes per annum (ktpa) in 2019 to 41,850 ktpa by 2023 from active, planned and announced projects.

The findings

The report, titled ‘Global Small-Scale LNG Liquefaction Capacity and Capital Expenditure Outlook – The US Leads Globally on Capacity Additions and Capital Expenditure Outlook’, shows the US to lead the charge in establishing such projects.

Among regions, North America is expected to have a capacity of 7,880 ktpa by 2023. Asia and the Former Soviet Union (FSU) follow with capacities of 3,810 ktpa and 3,230 ktpa, respectively, by 2023. 

Out of the countries considered, the US leads globally with 6,760 ktpa of new-build small-scale liquefaction capacity by 2023. China and Russia follow with capacities of 3,810 ktpa and 3,160 ktpa, respectively.

US-based Browntown and Browntown II, are the planned and announced terminals predicted have the highest small-scale LNG liquefaction capacities globally by 2023 with 2,120 ktpa each, followed by Portovaya in Russia with 1,500 ktpa.
