GlobalData’s latest report, ‘Global Refinery Hydrotreater Units Outlook to 2025 – Capacity and Capital Expenditure Outlook with Details of All Operating and Planned Hydrotreater Units,’ says that the global hydrotreater unit capacity increased from 56,777 thousand barrels per day (Mbpd) in 2015 to 56,951Mbpd in 2020 at an Average Annual Growth Rate (AAGR) of 1.1%. It is expected to increase from 59,951Mbpd in 2020 to 68,438Mbpd in 2025 at an AAGR of 2.6%.
The US, China, Japan, India, and Russia are the major countries that accounted for 56.3% of the total global hydrotreater units capacity in 2020.

The US had the highest refinery hydrotreater unit capacity globally in 2020 with 17,097Mbpd. Other key countries in terms of refinery hydrotreater unit capacity were China, Japan, India, and Russia with 7,063Mbpd, 4,223Mbpd, 3,494Mbpd and 1,877Mbpd, respectively. India witnessed the highest capacity growth during 2015-2020 with an AAGR of 3.8% among the key countries, followed by China and Russia with 3.1% and 2.8%, respectively.
Globally, 101 countries have active refineries with hydrotreater units and a total refinery hydrotreater capacity of 59,951Mbpd in 2020. Baytown (US), Jamnagar I (India), Ulsan (South Korea), Whiting (US) and Garyville (US) are the largest refineries in the world in terms of hydrotreater unit capacity in 2020.
By 2025, 111 refineries are expected to witness new build and expansion hydrotreater projects. Al-Zour (Kuwait), Lagos I (Nigeria), Yulong (China) and Siraf (Iran) are some of the refineries with the largest upcoming hydrotreater projects in the world during the outlook period 2021-2025.
